Malnutrition is still a huge problem in Chichicastenango and the surrounding area. For hundreds of years the Mayan Quiche Indians have believed that for the first two years of a baby's life they only needed to drink mother’s milk. It is a difficult process to change this way of thinking.

A year ago the nurses in charge of the milk program began teaching the mothers how to prepare, cook, and puree fresh fruits and vegetables to feed to their children at six months of age and older. The participating mothers are taking a bigger responsibility in the care of their children, bringing fruits and vegetables to the milk program, and seeing positive results in the growth of their children. We are seeing happier, better nourished, and healthier children!

The babies and children on our milk program continue to receive formula, cereal, and vitamins to supplement their breast milk feedings. And we continue to ask for your support and donation to this very vital children's program. It takes twenty dollars a month to maintain a child on the Milk Program.
