ladinos 56% - mayan indians 44%; 47% illiteracy rate. 60% of Mayan children
do not attend school. Average education is 2nd grade. In 1999, the infant mortality
rate was 45 out of 1000; the under 5 mortality rate was 60 out of 1000. Even
higher here in Quiche.
Department
of El Quiche’:
Quiche - over 700,000 population. Largest Mayan group. Most
women and unschooled children speak only Quiche. Majority of pastors and leaders
have a second grade education or less.

& Sharon Harvey:
In the pastorate many years, called as missionaries as youngsters,
became a reality 13 years ago. 3 children and 8 grandchildren. Twelve years
in Guatemala, seven years in Chichicastenango.
